The Waterways Trust 10 years of enriching people's lives through waterways

Thames Appeal

The Waterways Trust is working with the Environment Agency to support heritage, wildlife and community projects along the banks of the River Thames. During 2006 fifteen heritage, wildlife and education projects on the River were allocated grants totalling £34,000 thanks to the generosity of monthly donations from over 1,000 supporters.

Projects benefiting from these grants involve waterway regeneration, conservation, recreation, community arts, education and access and activity projects on and near the River Thames.

The Thames Appeal is an invaluable means of providing funds for smaller community groups and clubs to make improvements to their local area. We have been raising money for the Upper Thames since 2002. Some schemes benefiting from the appeal this year are:

  • A project to improve fish and conservation habitats at Chertsey Weir. Recent work to protect the riverbank at Old Windsor shows that environmental benefits such as better habitats for fish, invertebrates, birds and mammals are possible where hard engineering work is necessary.
  • Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust's project to install ponds and reopen old water channels, reviving Chimney Meadows on the Upper Thames Flood plain. Public access will also be improved with a boardwalk and hide.
  • The Archbishop Sumner Primary School has also been awarded funds to help organise a club offering trips and workshops to educate children and their parents about the River Thames. Trips will be available after school and during holiday periods. The aim is to encourage the local community to understand the importance of conservation and the history of the river and be encouraged to enjoy the facilities and activities available.
  • The Small Boat Club will help a special project aimed at minimising soil erosion and protecting wildlife habitats at Stevens Eit island The Middle
