WOW SAFE Education Programme
In conjunction with community arts group, Impact Arts, The Waterways Trust Scotland has developed an innovative water-safety education programme to teach young children how to be safe by canals and rivers.
Using visual arts and drama children between the ages of six and nine years learn how to visit their local canal or river safely. Through creative activities the children explore the dangers that waterways can pose whilst also learning about canals and how they can be used to develop a healthy and active lifestyle.
Since starting the programme in 2006 2,740 pupils from primary schools in Falkirk, Glasgow and Edinburgh have benefited from the water safety programme. The Trust is currently raising funds to extend the project to a further 800 children during 2009.
