The Waterways Trust

Volunteer Activities

The Waterways Trust is running a series of volunteer events in Rochdale and Oldham to bring life and people to the Rochdale Canal. These events are often just a few hours long and are suitable for everyone - whatever your age or ability. For more information on volunteer activities, please contact the Development Manager

Typical volunteer activities:

Litter Picking Events - Run by The Waterways Trust, these events are usually held in the afternoon on weekdays and weekends, lasting two hours. All equipment is provided. Volunteers - individuals and/ or groups - are urgently needed to help with this important work.

Guided Walks - We are looking for people in the know. If you know about the Rochdale/ Oldham area, canal heritage or birds and wildlife and fancy sharing your knowledge with others then we would like to hear from you. Local experts are needed to help the Development Manager lead walks along the Rochdale Canal; please contact the Development Manager if this is up your street.

Storytellers - We organise a range of children's events to encourage them to get involved with the canal too. If you have passion and energy and can help bring the story of our waterways, its heritage and natural environment to life, then we would like to hear from you!

Walking Buddies - Occasionally staff from The Waterways Trust need a 'buddy' for short walks along the canal to undertake safety checks or litter monitoring. If you are available mid-week for an hour or so and want some company too, please contact the Development Manager. No special skills are required, just a willingness to come along for a chat and a walk. Dogs and dog walkers welcome!

For more information on any of these activities please contact the Development Manager or leave a message for Clare Riches on 07795 838335.

We would also like to hear what you think. If you have any other ideas on how to bring life and people to our waterways, please get in touch.
