River Soar & Grand Union Canal, Leicestershire
The Waterways Trust is leading a partnership to explore the potential of revitalising the River Soar and Grand Union Canal in Leicestershire, including the creation of new visitor centres, restaurants, marinas and hydro-electric power generators.
A study has been funded by the East Midlands Development Agency and the Steering Group consists of: The Waterways Trust, British Waterways, Blaby District Council, Charnwood Borough Council, the Environment Agency, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council, Leicester Shire Promotions, Prospect Leicestershire and Oadby & Wigston Borough Council.
The Partnership sees significant potential to reposition the River Soar and Grand Union Canal in the region by strengthening its attractiveness and competitiveness as a leisure destination, and enhancing its role as a valuable green space for the surrounding communities to enjoy.
A strategy has been developed and was launched for consultation in November 2008. This strategy provides an assessment of the current position, issues and future opportunities for the River Soar and Grand Union Canal and proposes a series of actions based around the themes of a Green Waterway, a Visible Waterway and an Accessible Waterway.
The River Soar & Grand Union Canal Strategy is now complete and has been officially launched. The final document is now available for download. Click here to download (PDF 10MB)
