Maryhill Lighting Project
As part of the regeneration of Maryhill in Glasgow, The Waterways Trust Scotland, working with Impact Arts and Collective Architecture, has developed a project to involve young people in improving the environment at Maryhill Locks on the Forth & Clyde Canal.
The Maryhill Lighting Project, PULSE, was devised following a series of public consultation events. The aim is to create a series of five lighting installations around the area to help illuminate the canal making it safer for residents to visit as well as enhancing the environment.
In 2008 the first scheme was installed at the Whitehouse. Created by ten young people from the area, who spent six weeks working with professional artists , musicians and architects, the multicoloured lighting display at the Whitehouse is accompanied by a piece of original music. Through the project the young people have developed new skills and now see the canal in a positive light.
The Trust is currently fundraising for the Maryhill Aqueduct lighting programme.
Funder: Glasgow City Council funded the PULSE project.
