A Canal Runs Through It
The Waterways Trust helped young people in Droitwich discover more about the heritage of their town’s canals through a fascinating drama project.
With funding from Awards for All, Wychavon District Council and the Droitwich Local Strategic Partnership the Trust commissioned community drama specialists Red Banana Drama and Ice House to work with pupils from Droitwich’s first, middle and high school to create a play about the Droitwich Canals.
The pupils used stories uncovered through the Community Mind Map initiative as the basis for the play and following an intensive week spent working together, the four part play A Canal Runs Through It was staged to a packed house at Norbury Theatre on 6 March.
The purpose of the project was to help the young people of Drotiwch connect with the town’s canals and the restoration project. By using drama and creating this play, pupils in the town now understand the role the canals played in the past and their potential for the future.
