£86,000 for 37 projects along the River Thames
37 projects which care for, enhance and increase the use of the River Thames are benefiting from over £86,000 in grants from leading waterways charity, The Waterways Trust, thanks to generous donations from its supporters.
The Waterways Trust’s Thames Appeal is supported by the Environment Agency and provides grants for environmental, activity, education and access projects on and near the River Thames to encourage more people to make use of this magnificent waterway. Joanne Darlington, Head of (Development England & Wales) for The Waterways Trust, said, “The River Thames has a special place in many people’s hearts and it is thanks to the generosity of our supporters that we can fund so many schemes which use the river to enrich people’s lives by enhancing the natural environment, improving access and raising awareness of the Thames from Teddington to Cricklade. “We have been raising money for the upper reaches of the River Thames since 2002, and it is fantastic that we are be able to continue supporting the work of organisations both large and small to care for and promote England’s best known river so more people can enjoy it.” Samantha Holland at the Environment Agency said, “We are pleased to be working with The Waterways Trust to run the Thames Appeal. Lots of people who use the River Thames value what it has to offer and want to put something back. This scheme provides valuable funding that can also help smaller community groups and clubs make local improvements.” The successful projects this year are: River Access Improvements in the Lechlade Area - Ridgeway & Thames Path National Trails Office History Information Boards describing aspects of the River - Lechlade History Society (LHS) Works to junction of the River Thames and Thames &Severn Canal including a boat landing stage - Cotswold Canals Trust River Festival - Focus on Faringdon Oxford Canal Festival - Oxford City Canal Partnership OX4 on the river campaign - Falcon Rowing and Canoeing Club Sculling & Rowing in the Community - Hinksey Sculling School Lapwing Landscapes survey - RSPB Riverside Meadows Enhancements, Wallingford - South Oxfordshire District Council The Thames Heritage Tapestry - The Millennium Tapestry Company Kings Lock Visitors Information Centre - Environment Agency View Island Restoration - Reading Borough Council Beale Park Boat Show,Lake Project - The Child Beale Trust Historic Wharf Construction - Inland Waterways Association (IWA) Goring Gap Boat Club Family/Touring Section enlargement - Goring Gap Boat Club Annual charity duck race Henley-on-Thames - Lions Club Henley-on-Thames Regatta for the Disabled, Henley 2010 - Regatta for the Disabled Wildlife Walkway Interpretation (boards & literature)- River & Rowing Museum Foundation Introduction of rowing for 14 year olds - Longridge Activity Centre Riverbank Renovation - Upper Thames Sailing Club Clearance of Bray Cut - Maidenhead Waterways Restoration Group Annual Duck Derby and Family Fun Day - Lions Club Maidenhead Rivertime Boat Trust - Rivertime Boat Trust Ltd Windsor Schools Rowing Pathway - Windsor Boy's School Boat Club Canoe update Project - Wraysbury Skiff & Punting Club New Boat Fund - Burway Rowing Club Slipway and Landing Stage upgrade - Desborough Sailing Club Weybridge Society - Weybridge Society Otter Holts and Habitat Creation - Thames Landscape Stragegy Accessing The Thames, Thames Therapy Pilot Project - River Thames Boat Project Otter Holts and Habitat Creation - Thames Landscape Strategy Swingbridge 2 Thames Project - Surrey Care Trust Centenary 100 mile paddle - Girlguiding Wiltshire North Thames Volunteers - Thames21 River Thames Slipway Provision project - Environment Agency River Thames Tourist Information Points - Environment Agency River Thames Slipway Signage project - Environment Agency
