Student creates colourful design for waterways museum's rhino

The National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port will host one of the colourful rhinos that will be stampeding into Cheshire this summer as part of the Rhino Mania experience.

Students from West Cheshire College were challenged to come up with a design for the rhino which celebrates the town of Ellesmere Port, its people and the waterfront. Nita Philipson’s dramatic design was selected by the assessment panel as the winning entry.

John Inch, Museum Manager, explained: “We are delighted to be part of Rhino Mania, it is a fantastic way to show off the cultural gems that Chester and the surrounding area has to offer.

“As well as a fascinating heritage, Ellesmere Port is facing an exciting future and we wanted to capture this in the design for our rhino and asked students from West Cheshire College to come up with a unique and inspiring design that reflects this bright future and celebrates the history.

“We were very impressed with the concepts put forward by the students and are delighted to announce that the winner is Nita Philipson. Nita’s idea uses bright colours and shapes to reflect the past and the present in a fresh bold way.”

Lisa Marie Trump, Manager of Creative Arts at West Cheshire College, said: “This is a great opportunity for West Cheshire College Art and Design students to be involved with such a high profile project which will have such a noticeable local impact – bringing a unique and world class art event that’s designed to have huge public appeal into the heart of Ellesmere Port. Our learners are part of the future of Ellesmere Port and the opportunity for them to work with our friends at the National Waterways Museum and at Cheshire West and Cheshire County Council, to contribute their own unique artistic vision to the project is very exciting.”

Nita’s design will be painted by a group of students onto the fibreglass rhino which will exhibited at the National Waterways Museum as part of Rhino Mania from July to September. Follow progress on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rhino-Mania-at-National-Waterways-Museum/
