National Waterways Museum hosts 1940s themed Family & Local History Weekend
It won’t just be Spam Fritters on the menu next weekend (14 and 15 November) at the National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port! As part of their Winter programme of events, the Boat Museum Society and National Waterways Museum are organising a family and local history weekend with a 1940s flavour.
Whilst family and local history is the focus, a wide range of entertainment and activities with a 1940s theme are planned with the aim of attracting interest from all age groups. There will be talks by visiting speakers, plus exhibitions and the opportunity to find out from experts how to start researching family trees, as well as the chance to swap ideas and stories with other family historians. Entertainment planned includes: “Air Raid Archie” and a DJ playing music of the era will be performing in the Island Warehouse; strolling players will be roving around the site; classic cars and buses will be on display with the owners available to chat; and for younger visitors there will be themed activities in the Pattern Shop between 1pm and 3pm plus a round-the-site quiz. All the activities will be in addition to the Museum’s regular and popular visitor attractions including interactive displays, boat trips, ‘Using the Locks’ demonstrations, Porters Row cottages (with cosy fires and costumed volunteers) and demonstrations of traditional boating crafts such as rag rug making. Opening times for the event are 10am to 4pm on both days and normal Museum admission charges apply (Adults £5.50, Concessions £4.40, Children (5-16) £3.60, under 5s and Season Ticket Holders free).
