The Waterways Trust 10 years of enriching people's lives through waterways

New Collections Manager Appointed

National charity The Waterways Trust has appointed Peter Collins to the post of Collections Manager for its National Waterways Museum, based at Ellesmere Port.

The National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port, together with the Canal Museum in Stoke Bruerne and Waterways Museum in Gloucester Docks, hold the Inland Waterways Collection and the Waterways Archive, which are Designated as nationally important.

Peter will oversee the Trust’s conservation work in the museums and archives, caring for over 15,000 objects, including the collection of historic boats and the Archive holding 80,000 records.

Roger Hanbury, Chief Executive of The Waterways Trust, explains: “We are delighted to welcome Peter to our National Waterways Museum team. Peter will be working with our partners both regionally and nationally to help safeguard, manage and make our collection more accessible to more people. He’ll be working particularly closely with our volunteers, who play a key role in the care and interpretation at each museum site.”

Peter joins The Waterways Trust from the Imperial War Museum Duxford where he held the post of Senior Collections Officer. Peter has a Masters degree in Records Management from Northumbria University and a Masters degree in Museums & Heritage Management from Nottingham Trent University.

Peter Collins says: “I’m delighted to be joining the world of waterways following five years of military history with Imperial War Museum Duxford. I have always had a very keen interest in the history of Britain’s waterways and I am really looking forward to taking up my post with The Waterways Trust and the National Waterways Museum. It’s an exciting time for The Trust’s museums and archives with plans to amalgamate the Archive in Ellesmere Port and to provide more information online.

“I look forward to working with the staff and volunteers involved in the care of the wonderful national collection of waterways history held in all three museums. I also look forward to meeting the families and enthusiasts who visit the museums and archive and to helping deliver some of the Trust’s exciting new learning initiatives, including the informal learning programme at Ellesmere Port.”

Peter will take up his post on 16 November 2009 and will be based at National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port.
