Bankers To Create Nature Trail at Falkirk Wheel
Working alongside staff from The Waterways Trust Scotland and British Waterways Scotland, 30 Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) directors will today (15 September 2009) be taking a break from money matters to create a new 3km nature trail in woods alongside the Falkirk Wheel and the Forth & Clyde Canal.
Their tasks for the day will include cutting through vegetation to create a pathway through the woods, removing old fencing, building a new handrail and creating new connecting paths to The Falkirk Wheel visitor centre and boat moorings. David Salthouse from RBS explains: “RBS is committed to working in the communities where we operate. The new nature trail at The Falkirk Wheel is one of a series of environmental improvement volunteer days where we have worked with The Waterways Trust Scotland to improve the environment around the canals over the last two years. These projects give us a chance not only to make a positive difference to local amenities but also to give something back to the community” Christine Donnelly, Development Manager for The Waterways Trust Scotland, explains: “We are delighted to be working again with RBS volunteers to make further waterway access improvements. The nature trail will provide a lovely new walk for local people and visitors to The Falkirk Wheel to enjoy. In the coming months we also plan to put up information boards with details of the sorts of animals and birds people can look out for, plus information about the history of the Forth & Clyde canal.” In the last 12 months over 180 RBS employees have volunteered for seven canalside improvement projects, giving up 180 days and £9000 in volunteer time value. Other projects have included creating a community orchard alongside the Union Canal in Wester Hailes and re-planting the Sensory Garden at Auchinstarry Basin.
