The Waterways Trust 10 years of enriching people's lives through waterways

Last chance to enjoy free festival fun

It is the last chance for people living in Manchester, Rochdale, Oldham and Calderdale to enjoy some free festival fun and discover the historic Rochdale Canal which runs through the heart of the region.

The 2009 Rochdale Canal Festival got off to a great start on Saturday 11 July when the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale officially opened the week-long free festival at the Festival Fun Day at Ealees, Littleborough.

The festival will culminate at a special Festival Finale at Rochdale Canal Basin in Failsworth on Sunday 19 July when the Mayor and Mayoress of Oldham will arrive at the Festival Finale by boat to officially mark the end of a week-long programme of free family entertainment

With free boat trips, bouncy castles, face painting, art & craft stalls, live music workshops, guided canalside walk and cycle rides and angling taster sessions, the event will provide a fitting finale to the third annual Rochdale Canal Festival.

Lucy Rogers, Rochdale Canal Development Manager at The Waterways Trust, said: “As well as the festival finale on Sunday, there are still lots of events and activities for people to come along to including guided bike rides, waterway walks, heritage and wildlife workshops, kayaking lessons and fishing sessions.

“The festival has been a great success so far, with a programme packed full of hands-on activities that have really shown off the canal and provided the perfect opportunity for people living in the region to discover all that the restored waterway has to offer.

“This is the third annual Rochdale Canal Festival and we are delighted that so many people, groups and organisations have come together to make the event a success.”

The award-winning Canal Festival, which won the national Waterways Renaissance Awards for its Partnership work, aims to promote and celebrate the restored Rochdale Canal, through a programme of events and activities designed to encourage people to spend their leisure time making the most of the canal and all it has to offer, from boating and walking to relaxing and enjoying the wildlife.
