New partnership to help shape future of museum
A new partnership has been formed to help create a sustainable future for the National Waterways Museum Gloucester Docks.
Led by The Waterways Trust, who currently operate the attraction, the new museum management group aims to work together to maximise the potential of the dockside attraction. Roger Hanbury, Chief Executive of The Waterways Trust, said: “There is considerable support for the museum and through this new partnership we want to strengthen local ownership so that the museum is regarded as a valued community resource. “The new museum management group has met twice and is proving very productive. Everyone involved in the partnership wants to see the museum thrive and are keen to work together to ensure it is a success.” Ideas under discussion include involving students and volunteers from the local area in the day-to-day museum operations and school visit programme. “The museum is situated at the heart of the regenerated docks,” continued Roger. “We would like to see the museum becoming a hub for visitors to Gloucester Docks, a place where people can get their bearings and understand the rich history of the area, spend time with their families discovering the waterways, and get a different perspective of the city on one of the boat trips.” The museum management group consists of The Waterways Trust, the Friends of the National Waterways Museum, Gloucester City Council, Gloucestershire College, Marketing Gloucester, Gloucester City Centre Community Partnership, Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, Coots, British Waterways and Gloucestershire County Council. The National Waterways Museum Gloucester Docks charts the history of our nation’s inland waterways and the evolution of the city’s docks. Vibrant graphics and stimulating displays specially designed to appeal to children help to bring the fascinating story of our waterways to life. In addition to exploring the museum galleries visitors can also experience the canal and river with a boat trip and of course find refreshment in the café.
