The Waterways Trust 10 years of enriching people's lives through waterways

Finalists announced for 2009 Waterways Renaissance Awards

A project to regenerate the waterfront in Castleford in West Yorkshire, the creation of a series of self-guided walks along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Chorley for visually impaired people and plans for the construction of a linear park along the Connswater river in Belfast are just a few of the diverse and inspiring schemes to reach the finals of the 2009 Waterways Renaissance Awards.

The winners will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony and dinner, which will take place at Liverpool Arena and Conference Centre on Tuesday 31 March 2009. The event will be hosted by Jim Hancock, former BBC Political Editor and presenter of BBC News North West.

The Waterways Renaissance Awards, run by The Waterways Trust and BURA (British Urban Regeneration Association), aim to recognise best practice in sustainable waterway regeneration and development throughout the UK.

The nominations were judged by an independent assessment panel, comprising waterway, conservation and regeneration experts and chaired by Sir Peter Soulsby MP.

Sir Peter Soulsby MP, chair of the assessment panel for the awards, said: “It is my great pleasure to announce this impressive list of exceptional projects that have made it to the final stage of the 2009 Waterways Renaissance Awards. On behalf of the panel, I would like to thank everybody who has submitted their nominations - the number and quality of which was overwhelming this year. All selected schemes are truly inspirational and their achievements will provide valuable lessons that will help drive the modern renaissance of our waterways. They provide examples of successful community engagement and partnership working and demonstrate the importance of waterways for the creation of new education, recreation and business opportunities.”
