The Waterways Trust 10 years of enriching people's lives through waterways

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO SPRING CLEAN TOWPATH

People young and old are urged to get their hands dirty and help spring clean the Forth & Clyde Canal from Spiers Wharf to the Nolly Bridge on Saturday 31 January 2009.

The event, organised by The Waterways Trust Scotland and British Waterways Scotland is supported by oriental food specialists, See Woo, who’s store is based near the canal in Saracen Street, Hamilton.

Canal Community Liaison Officer, Steven Cole, said: “The Forth & Clyde Canal is a fantastic resource, available for all the people of Glasgow to enjoy. However, litter along the towpath can unfortunately be a problem and we want as many people as possible to come along on Saturday 31 January to help spring clean the towpath.

“We are delighted to have See Woo supporting the event. This is the first Saturday after the Chinese New Year and a great opportunity for those who have enjoyed the celebrations to burn off some excess calories. 2009 is the year of the Ox. Characteristics of people born in the year of the Ox include reliable, dependable and hard working so we are hoping that a lot of hard working, dependable people turn out to lend a hand!”

The event starts at 10am and finishes at 2pm. All equipment will be provided. See Woo Oriental Food Specialists have also kindly donated refreshments for everyone who volunteers.

Steven said: “With the chance to enjoy some fresh air, meet new people and make a real impact on the local environment as well as enjoying oriental refreshments, there is no doubt that this will be a popular event.”

Volunteers should wear suitable clothing for working outside in January and meet outside the British Waterways office on Applecross street, Glasgow at 10am on Saturday 31 January. Litter will be collected from the towpath along the Glasgow Branch of the canal from Spiers Wharf to the Nolly Bridge.

People of all ages are welcome. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
