The Waterways Trust 10 years of enriching people's lives through waterways

Steven set to make a splash on the Forth & Clyde Canal

Steven Coles is on a mission to make a splash on the Forth & Clyde Canal in Glasgow and West Dunbartonshire, encouraging more people to use the waterway and is surroundings.

Steven, Canal Community Liaison Officer for The Waterways Trust Scotland, a national charity which uses waterways as a way to enrich people’s lives, said: “Many people think canals are just for people on boats. This just isn’t the case, canals such as the Forth & Clyde are there for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s walking the dog, going for a cycle ride or simply taking a moment to sit and relax.

“Our canals are also a haven for wildlife. Even in a built up city like Glasgow or a town such as Clydebank, it is amazing the different animals, plants and creatures which you can find along the waterway.”

Based in Glasgow, Steven will be working with people along the route of the Forth & Clyde Canal, from Glasgow City to Bowling Harbour, to establish the waterway as a community resource and a catalyst for social and economic regeneration. Through talks, activity and environmental projects Steven will be encouraging people young and old to value and care for the canal and use it to improve their lifestyle.

Steven continued: “With obesity rates rising, our canals can be used as part of a healthy lifestyle programme. Towpaths can be used for walking, cycling and jogging, while people can canoe on the water. It’s on your doorstep and it’s free. What could be better?

“I’m really looking forward to working with people in Glasgow and West Dunbartonshire to help them discover the amazing range of opportunities that the Forth & Clyde Canal has to offer and how it can have a real impact on the quality of life for those living and working nearby.”

Karen Moore, Development Director Scotland, said: “We are delighted to have Steven join the team. Getting people involved with their local waterway is what the Trust is all about, our canals are a rich resource and Steven will help even more people living near the Forth & Clyde Canal to realise the full potential of their waterway.”

The post of Canal Community Liaison Officer has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Scottish Natural Heritage, British Waterways Scotland and Glasgow City Council.
