The Waterways Trust 10 years of enriching people's lives through waterways

Fresh air and friends on free guided walks

Waterways and environmental heritage charity, The Waterways Trust Scotland, is launching a new series of six guided walks along the Union and Forth & Clyde Canals in Falkirk starting at 10.30am on Saturday 18 October.

Feet First Falkirk has been specially designed to promote and encourage walking as a healthy, educational and enjoyable form of exercise for all ages. As well as getting fit, walkers will be able to get some fresh air and make new friends.

These walks are free of charge and the Trust is hoping that people in the Falkirk area will come along and enjoy the canals, which are a wonderful resource for exercise and learning, right in the heart of their community. Dates and details below.

Two local primary schools – Laurieston Primary School and Westquarter Primary School are undertaking a separate programme of canal walks designed to complement the school curricula and the wider agenda of promoting environmental awareness and education; healthier lifestyles and the benefits of exercise.

Karen Moore, Development Director for The Waterways Trust Scotland, said: “We have found our previous programmes of canal walks to be an excellent way for people to find out more about the area and people where they live. Not only the canals, their history and past, but also the wonderfully rich environment and wildlife that the canals support and the role they have to play in their futures.

“The schools get so much educational benefit from the programme. Our Feet First community walks offer the chance to meet new people of all ages, and to walk in a safe, friendly environment with an experienced and knowledgeable guide leading the way.”

The innovative healthy-living programme is run in partnership between The Waterways Trust Scotland and British Waterways Scotland, funded by Falkirk Council and The Big Lottery.
