Feet First Walk at Harrison Park
Our first Union Canal creative writing walk on the 1st
September led by award-winning poet Angela Blacklock-Brown
attracted 10 people. Angela set us a few exercises to get us
started - reflecting on the peaceful canal at Harrison Park through
their senses. Before we knew it, we were compiling haiku
(ancient Japanese poetry) to the formal 5-7-5 syllable
structure. Everyone had a go and enjoyed the challenge of
making the words fit!
Hot chocolate and coffee on board Zazou Narrowboat Café helped
us on our net challenge - 'canal peevers' (Scots for
hopscotch). The water, barges, swans, ducks, trees and all
manner of human activity provided inspiration for themed words or
phrases that could fit into the peevers boxes. Budding poets
and writers have promised to send in their work for the
website. Watch this space!
The time passed so quickly and enjoyably that we've decided to
do it again in October with new writing challenges and sketching
next time. More details to follow.
