Museums and Archives
The Waterways Trust operates three museums – the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port, Gloucester Waterways Museum and the Canal Museum at Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire.
These museums bring to life the continuing story of the profound influence of the waterways on social, technological, economic and environmental development in the UK for the thousands of people visiting them each year.
The collection is a unique national asset and has been designated as being of national importance. It dates from the beginning of canal building in the second half of the eighteenth century to the present day, providing a vital resource helping reconnect people with their past.
We work with a range of bodies to continually develop the museums as centres for interpretation, conservation, research and recreation.
Through interactive displays and exploring working and static boats together with permanent and temporary exhibitions and a packed events programme, the waterways museums provide an unrivalled opportunity for people of all ages to delve into our industrial heritage.
