Three Mills Island

House Mill is the largest remaining tidal mill in the
world and is a hidden gem in a deprived area of east London.I am
delighted to support to the campaign to see it restored.
Dan Cruickshank, TV presenter and historian

We have helped secure £248,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund,
£22,000 from English Heritage and £25,000 from London Thames
Development Gateway Corporation to develop plans to restore the
historic House Mill on Three Mills Island in Bromley-by-Bow, East
London.
From now until August we will be working with the River Lea
Tidal Mill Trust and our partners to progress these plans. In
August 2011 we will submit a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for
approximately £4million to create a vibrant visitor attraction on
the edge of the Olympic Park.
As well as being an iconic building, House Mill is a Grade I
listed building and is on the Heritage At Risk register. It is
hugely important both for its heritage value and its future
potential to generate hydro-electricity.
Once restored, we want to harness that power not just to
demonstrate milling but to generate electricity for the site.
The intention is to produce hydro-electricity from all four
wheels and from new micro hydro turbines, combining 18th and 21st
century technologies. It will provide a distinctive and
exceptional education resource.
