Vice Presidents

David Suchet, OBE, Vice President

David Suchet, OBE, became Vice President of The Waterways Trust in 2001. While he's best known as Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, David Suchet is also an associate artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he's performed in plays such as King Lear and Richard II. He has a great passion for waterways, and has supported a number of campaigns across the UK to help reinstate canal use and protection.

Timothy West, CBE, Vice President

A renowned British actor, he and his wife, Prunella Scales, are staunch supporters of the waterways and have been owners of a narrow boat since 1979. Timothy is the Vice President of the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust and Patron of the Huddersfield Canal Society. He is actively involved in supporting a number of canal restorations including the Cotswold Canals, the Hereford and Gloucester Canal and the Litchfield and Hatherton Canals.

John Craven, OBE, Vice President

John Craven is the presenter of Countryfile, the BBC's current affairs programme which highlights countryside issues. He joined Countryfile after building his reputation on the ground breaking John Craven's Newsround, aimed at bringing current affairs to young people. John was awarded his OBE for Services to Broadcasting, and has won two BAFTA's for his programmes.

Sonia Rolt, Vice President

Sonia South was an actress when she joined the band of women working narrow boats during the Second World War. After the war she remained on the canals and married a working boatman named George Smith. They worked a pair of boats Cairo and Warwick. This in turn led her to become one of the earlier members of the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) and later married L T C Rolt, one of the inaugural members of the IWA. In 1986, IWA 40th Anniversary year, she accepted an Honorary Membership of the Association.

Paul Atterbury, Vice President

Paul has a background in historical arts, and has worked as a freelance writer, lecturer, broadcaster and exhibition curator, in this capacity often for the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He has written or edited over thirty books, and is known for his work on railways and canals. He has lectured all over the world including within auction houses in the United States and Canada.

John Fletcher

John Fletcher has a long standing connection with the nation's inland waterways. National Chairman of IWA since November 2002, he is also a boat owner and has a special interest in the built heritage surrounding the waterways and restoration of canals. John is a keen photographer and has spent decades photographing, talking and writing about the UK's canals. He is also Chairman of the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Society.
